Sustainable Building Best Practice Awards 2004

A Green Building Challenge was held as part of the 2004 Africa Regional Sustainable Building Conference held at Spier, Stellenbosch and organised by the Council for Scientific Industries Research (CSIR). Entrants had to prepare a PowerPoint presentation explaining their project in a limited number of slides.  Projects had to be rated according to a matrix of 15 categories that was developed by the CSIR. For more information go to: www.csir.co.za.

Eco Design entered a project for new staff housing at Mtunzini in Kwa-Zulu Natal.  The project was built from sandbags, using a generic, load-bearing ladder-frame constructed from locally harvested invasive aliens and roof with rafter purlin gum poles. Services included solar water heating and dry composting toilets. The involvement of the local community was very high.

Using the CSIR’s SBAT (Sustainable Building Assessment Tool ) and on a scale of 1–5, Eco Design scored 3.6 for the social aspects, 4.2 for the economic, 4.2 for environmental aspects with an overall score of 4 earning us the Sustainable Building Best Practice Award 2004 for the Africa Region in the Residential category.  To download the PDF version of the entry click here
