A 3 day conference hosted by the SBE 2022: Sustainable Built Environments
Andy presented on day 2 & 3
DAY 2 | SESSION 5B | APPROPRIATE URBAN STRATEGIES Natural Building as a tool to unplug from degenerative systems & build a regenerative future
DAY 3 | SESSION 10 | REGENERATIVE DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION Cob bale construction - an earth-slip pre-coated straw bale building method for efficient eco-friendly labour-based construction
The SBE 2022 conference addresses how we counteract the impact of the built environment on the planet and how we adapt to a changing climate, extreme weather, variable resources, social emergencies and biodiversity loss. What can we proactively relinquish or adapt from our current and past built solutions to achieve the transformative, regenerative change necessary? Our designs need to deal with both mitigation and adaptation.

A selection of project drawings 2021

Having received the required approvals, the owner builder Simon and his cousin, a professional contractor - Justin Poggen - have started with the construction of House Klipspringer. while Aubrie Visagie the consulting engineer has conducted his site inspection.
Located in Wild Rivers Estate in Mpumalanga, it promises to be a groundbreaking modern eco-construction for the area.
We have selected some of the drawings of this project to share.
It is located just downstream of the confluence of the Olifants and Blyde rivers, situated on a rocky piece of bushveld type ground with stunning south-facing river and Blyde River canyon mountain views.
The design nestles the house between the rocks and trees, taking full advantage of its gorgeous views while providing well-shaded spaces and lots of protected outdoor and open plan living.
It's hot up there, so the design responds with materials like exposed rammed earth, earthen floors, and planted roofs.
The design also utilizes post and beam-exposed trusses with pole rafters. There are vented openings against the timber whitewashed timber boarded ceilings to illuminate the roof spaces with natural light and allow for passive cooling with stack effect ventilation.
The forms of the main living space rise to the views, providing a sheltering u-shaped courtyard and then hunker down again to shade the bedroom wings on either side for a more bush lodge-like appearance.

Facades of the Future

Tune in here for the panel discussion where Eco Design's director - Andy Horn - contributes as one of the experts on the panel discussion's webinar discussing FACADES OF THE FUTURE - hosted by Marcus Evans Events , of which Andy Horn is one of the guest panellists.
The building's façade is the essential element and amongst the most challenging aspects of a building to design as it becomes the epitome of an iconic building. With technology accelerating at a rapid pace, advanced facade design changes dynamically. Understanding trend data around façade design and geometry helps us see the direction the future is moving in, and as façades become more sophisticated with technological advancements, there is so much more scope for innovation.
Join our webinar to discuss and debate the design and performance of next-generation facades and gain critical takeaways and proven insights on making your ideas become a reality. We bring together the best building professionals and experts to share insights on how facade ideas are brought to life.
